Life is a cruel game.

Over its course, you win some and you lose some. We all know this. You’re dealt a good hand and you reap the benefits for a (more often than not) short time, after which—in a daze of good feelings and the utmost confidence—you throw all of your chips in waiting for the next win…and lose spectacularly. It’s that constant cycle we all find ourselves locked in, and all we can do is live it, whether we want to accept it or not.

But why do the losses seem to carry so much more weight than the wins? Why does the negativity of the problems, pains, bad feelings and sorrow of losing seem to carry more weight than the positivity of the solutions, relief, good feelings and joy when we win? It’s like any substance-induced euphoria. Everything is swell for a short period of time, then inevitably it all falls apart. You crash. Until your next fix, that is.

The wins are the band-aids of life. They are temporary fixes for the wounds opened by the losses. When the wounds heal, a scar remains. Then like a disease, the losses come back to plague once more. And the cycle continues.

The only escape, the only total relief, the only way out of this cruel game is another inevitability we face: death.

Too bad such a permanent solution is simply not an option to consider until it finally reaches us in its own time.

Some may tell you that we all want to win one-hundred percent of the time. But if that were the case, we would have no free agency. We would not ever fail at the game. Everyone would win the grand prize. There would be no variety, no spontaneity, no choices to make. It’s a sad truth.

So why, then, can’t the wins be more frequent? Why can’t the euphoria last longer? Why can’t everything just work out the way we want it to?

We know the rules of the game and we play it because we have no choice. But the results, like a “fair” card game, are truly random. In the grand scheme of things, nothing happens for a reason. Nothing. It’s all random. Even if you believe in a creator, do you really think he/she/they/it sits there and orchestrates everyone’s life path? It can’t be. Otherwise we would not be the sole masters of our own destiny. We would have no free agency. Those who believe that everything happens for a reason are simply rationalizing these random life events to reach a conclusion. An explanation. We yearn to completely understand everything, but we can’t. We want simple, easily understandable explanations and reasons for things that we cannot begin to explain or fully comprehend. No one can simply accept things as they are without seeing light at the end of the tunnel. If we resign ourselves to the fact that we can’t find a reasonable explanation for something that happens to us, we take comfort in the thought that someone else (God) has already figured it out. It’s a terrible coping mechanism. As much as we explain it away and try to ignore it, the fact still remains: some things will never have conclusions. We need to own up to this fact. Life is random. Life happens randomly. Ignore this and you’re simply fooling yourself.

Forgive me for waxing philosophic. I need to hash these thoughts out because I’m getting sick and tired of this damn game. It’s wearing me out and forcing me to go places I don’t want to be. I’ve been holding out hope that somehow I can cheat the game, shift the odds so they’re in my favor. Haven’t quite figured it out yet.

I perceive that many people around me are in love. They’ve got someone to identify with, to share affection with, simply enjoy their companionship. A love that is reciprocated so both parties benefit. I’m in love too, but it stops short of reciprocation. Here is where well-intentioned friends spew out advice drawn from movie clichés: talk to them, express your feelings in the open. Get it off your chest, don’t hide it.

But what if hiding it were your only option? What if expressing your true feelings had the potential to destroy a beautiful friendship that you hold dear? Therein lies the dilemma. Because bottling those feelings inside just eats you alive. These feelings want to be known but the rational brain won’t allow it. The unfortunate side affect of this is the opening of deep wounds.

It kills me to be able to spend time with someone and get a great deal of enjoyment out of it, all while wanting so much more and being barred from having it. Seeing the face and hearing the voice you want to wake up to every morning for the rest of your life. Shaking hands you wish were caressing you. Watching lips move that you long to taste. Wanting so desperately to share the bounty of love you hold inside of you. And have it reciprocated. And then trying your best to resign yourself to the fact that you can never have it. Them.

At this point I’m forecasting a life of loneliness and celibacy. Certainly not what I want, and quite a bleak outlook. I need a break, because this really fucking sucks. I’m tired.

Cruel (and Random) Game of Life, go screw yourself. I hate you. Yet I can't live without you.

My ongoing legal battle with the Superior Court of Los Angeles County has finally come to an end. After extorting $186 from me, the court took 4 months to reach a decision and let me know about it.

The vedict? Guilty. Traffic school OK. You owe us $46.

"Officer" Raymond Hsu (ID# 3775) actually took the time to write a response to my allegations that he cited me by setting up an illegal speed trap. Of course the court won't tell you WHY they reached their decision, or even what the officer wrote in his response. You're guilty. Take traffic school. Give us more money.

Yes, I'm bitter. Yes, I'm pissed. Yes, I exceeded the posted speed limit.

Traffic enforcement is a fucking joke. It's simply a revenue enhancer for the city, and with the exception of getting drunk drivers off the road, it does little to make our lives safer.

Ugh.

So months have gone by since I initially fed the rumor mill about our dear Ms. Sweet's upcoming video. First I have to make a correction: Sweet's new project does NOT involve Tera Patrick. Misinformation always comes packaged with hearsay.

We now have the definite truth: Jessica Sweet no longer exists.

Some apparently don't like the name change and prefer her old stage name over the new image. On HeyFreak.com one visitor quips about the new identity:

A coalition of religious and family groups criticized video game makers Tuesday for creating products that allegedly glorify murder and hate crimes--and slammed retailers for selling such games to minors.

A group led by the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility, an investor advocacy group, released its list of the 10 most violent games as a warning to parents about to set out on holiday shopping expeditions.

"Unwary parents and grandparents need to know there are certain violent games that should be off-limits to children," said Sister Pat Wolf, executive director of ICCR, singling out games such as "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" that reward players for killing and looting characters. "These are the kind of values a serial killer might embrace," she said.

Aside from "Grand Theft," the list includes recent best-sellers such as "Halo 2," "Doom 3" and "Half Life 2." The report also singled out "America's Army," a free game distributed by the U.S. Army as a recruiting tool. Wolf criticized it for being available to users regardless of age.

"JFK Reloaded," a controversial new game that re-enacts the assassination of John F. Kennedy, came out too late to make the list but attracted comments during a Tuesday ICCR press conference to promote the report. New York City Councilman Eric Gioia said the game is an extreme example of what's wrong with the game industry. "I couldn't believe someone would choose to make money on something as scarring to the American psyche as this," Gioia said.

The report goes on to criticize the ratings system devised by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) to label potentially objectionable games, saying the system is too vague and enforced haphazardly at best by retailers.

Gioia said his own research showed retailers made no efforts to prevent preteens from buying games rated "M" (intended for players 17 and older) in the vast majority of cases. "An investigation I conducted last year showed a minor could walk into almost any store selling video games in New York City and purchase them without difficulty," he said.

Retail trade group the Interactive Entertainment Merchants Association said in a statement that retailers are committed to enforcing ESRB ratings and are demanding identification from young buyers. "It is our belief that it is quite simply too early to assign a grade to the retailers' enforcement policies," the IEMA said in a statement, "but that if a grade need be assigned out of habitual ritual, nothing less than an 'A' is worthy of their collective efforts over the past 11 months."

Digital agenda

Contributors to the report also criticized the ESRB ratings themselves, saying they're too vague and are mainly intended to shield game makers from criticism. "Adults need to understand game makers and retailers simply are not on their side," Wolf said.

The ESRB released a report Monday highlighting a self-commissioned survey that found more than 80 percent of parents considered the group's ratings appropriate and helpful. "As confirmed by the study just completed, the ESRB rating system is an extremely effective tool for the millions of consumers who rely on it as they shop for entertainment software for their families," Patricia E. Vance, president of the ESRB, said in a statement.

Other groups contributing to the violent-games list went further, calling on retailers to apply the same criteria to games they apply to other media. Dr. Martha Burk, president of the Center for Advancement of Public Policy, noted that leading retailer Wal-Mart bans sexually explicit magazines and CDs but continues to sell "Grand Theft Auto" games.

"The retailers have standards for other products," Burk said. "Would Wal-Mart sell a board game where a player has to have sex with a prostitute to move forward four spaces and then kill her to move forward another six spaces? I don't think so."

I was browsing MoveOn.org this morning and a parallel between different parts of their site amused me.

Under 'News From MoveOn' I spotted the following...
"Last week, a group of far-right Bush allies released an ugly and outrageous ad which claims that John Kerry faked his injuries, betrayed his troops, and 'dishonored his country' in Vietnam. The ad features people who say 'I served with John Kerry' (although they didn't) and who make numerous provably false accusations about Kerry's war record."

Okay. So let's go next door to the MoveOn Voter Fund's Bush In 30 Seconds website. Oh, gee, ONE HUNDRED FIFTY ugly and outrageous ad spots released by a group of far-left Kerry allies!

Now, I don't care that they ran the Bush In 30 Seconds contest, but it's just plain hypocrisy to openly sponsor the creation of political ads for your side of the political spectrum and then launch petitions and rally against your political opposites when they're do exactly the same thing you are!

MoveOn, welcome to the USA, bitches. You have the right to air ads with your warped political views, but guess what, so do the 'far-right Bush allies.' Quit your fucking whining and play fair. You should be focusing on your grassroots campaigning against those on the right and attacking their ideologies, not trying to silence their voices.

Woman Fired For Eating 'Unclean' Meat
Attorney: 'It's A Classic Case Of Religious Discrimination'

ORLANDO, Fla. -- A Central Florida woman was fired from her job after eating "unclean" meat and violating a reported company policy that pork and pork products are not permissible on company premises, according to Local 6 News.

Lina Morales was hired as an administrative assistant at Rising Star -- a Central Florida telecommunications company with strong Muslim ties, Local 6 News reported.

However, 10 months after being hired by Rising Star, religious differences led to her termination.

Morales, who is Catholic, was warned about eating pizza with meat the Muslim faith considered "unclean," Local 6 News reported. She was then fired for eating a bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich, according to the report.

"Are you telling me they fired you because you had something with ham on it?" Local 6 News reporter Mike Holfeld asked.

"Yes," Morales said.

Woman Fired After Eating Pork

Holfeld asked, "A pizza and a BLT sandwich?"

"Yes," Morales said.

Local 6 News obtained the termination letter that states she was fired for refusing to comply with company policy that pork and pork products are not permissible on company premises.

However, by the company's own admission to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, that policy is not written, Local 6 News reported.

"Did you ever sign to or agree to anything that said I will not eat pork?" Holfeld asked Morales.

"Never," Morales said. "When I got hired there, they said we don't care what religion you are."

Attorney Travis Hollifield is representing Morales in a lawsuit against the company.

"It's just un-American," Hollifield said. "It's not in compliance with the laws of this country."

Local 6 News reported that the case has precedent-setting issues because it addresses employee rights and religion in the workplace.

"It's a classic case of religious discrimination," Hollifield said. "They have not articulated a single reason other than religious reason behind the policy."

The CEO of Rising Star, Kujaatele Kweli, told Local 6 News that they have tried to create an office that accommodates anybody's religion -- not just Islam.

"Clearly you're accommodating," Holfeld said.

"Yes." Kweli replied.

"And you have an ecumenical philosophy," Holfeld said.

"Yes," Kweli replied.

"[Then] shouldn't you be able to accommodate all faiths in the same lunch room?" Holfeld asked.

"We do, we can," Kweli said.

"But you've dismissed one of your employees for eating pork in the lunch room," Holfeld said.

"Yes, pork is considered unclean," Kweli said.

The Koran forbids Muslims from eating pork. And according to Kweli, Morales and every employee at the company is advised of the no pork policy.

"Our point of view is to respect the laws of the land and the laws of the land as I understand it is to the accommodate people's right to practice their religions if you can," Kweli said.

"Even if it impacts other people?" Holfeld asked.

"Well, it always impacts other people," Kweli replied.

Orlando attorney Mark Nejame is close to the Muslim community, Local 6 News reported. He said Kweli's intentions may cross constitutional parameters, according to the report.

"They're making it seem that if you don't follow a certain set of religious practices and beliefs then you're going to be terminated and that's wrong," Nejame said. "If this case prevails, what it will mean -- the implications of this case -- is it will eliminate accommodations of religion."

Both sides are steadfast in their belief that they are right. Morales is taking the company to court charging discrimination, Local 6 News reported.

Kim, Karina and I went to Old Town Pasadena last night to rent a DVD...

Turns out that of her 28 titles, Romantix Pasadena had exactly one available! Let's just say that 2 on 1's #16 has her doing the nasty--pretty damn nastily. I ripped her scene off of the DVD last night and I'm encoding an AVI this morning. I'll burn a CD for whoever wants one, but don't expect it to be posted in full on the web. Maybe a few clips or something.

Judging from her performance, Jessica Sweet isn't all that convincing of an actress, but she does receive off-camera directions well. And she gets slam fucked! What could be better?!

Let me warn you, though...it's a really fucking weird feeling to see someone you know as a soft-spoken, innocent girl talking dirty to some guy who's fucking her on videotape. Really weird.

Newsbrief: British Drug Panel Considering Anti-Drug Vaccinations for Schoolchildren 7/30/04

The British newspaper the Independent on Sunday reported this week that "a radical scheme to vaccinate children against future drug addiction is being considered by ministers." Actually, the proposal is being considered by a committee of scientists empaneled by the government earlier this year, the Brain Science, Addiction and Drugs project.

Under the scheme, physicians would immunize children against drugs such as heroin, cocaine, and nicotine. The plan would target children "at risk" of becoming smokers or drug users, but at this stage there is no clue as to how it will be decided who is "at risk."

Such an immunization would "provide adults with protection from the euphoria that is experienced by drug users," the Independent reported. According to the newspaper, such concoctions are being developed by pharmaceutical companies and could be on the market within two years.

"People could be vaccinated against drugs at birth as you are against measles," said David Nutt, a committee member as well as a senior member of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs. "You could say cocaine is more dangerous than measles, for example. It is important that there is a debate on this issue. This is a huge topic -- addiction and smoking are major causes of premature death."

The proposal is raising caution flags in Britain and beyond. Members of Parliament warned that while such a program could be beneficial, it must be done with public consultation and with a close look at ethical questions.

The Center for Cognitive Liberty and Ethics, a California-based organization, is warning that anti-drug immunizations are a prime example of what it refers to as "coercive pharmacotherapy" and is sounding the alarm against the proposal. Earlier this month, the Center published a 50-page report on the topic. Since I've got enough people infuriated with my evil capitalist rants, I'll tell a boring story about work.

At KLRN Instructional Television, we've got a monumental library of programming, all on videocassette. Unfortunately, the majority of this is comprised of 5-hour school board meetings and late 80s to early 90s public television-funded educational programming. During the nighttime, we air these shows until around 9:00, and then we run a satellite feed of NASA television or Classic Arts Showcase overnight as "filler" programming. NASA runs in the morning and afternoon as well, with a few of our regular series shows peppering the lineup (Conversations with the Camwhore Superintendent, a 30 minute roundtable talk show and Superintendent's Narcissistic Update, a 5 minute program highlighting what's going on in the district each week). Our superintendent loves seeing himself on a local cable channel. Anyways, I digress.

We're picking up the NASA feed one day when I notice a promo saying that they're moving to a different bird in the sky. How much advanced notice did they give? Oh, about 3 days' notice.

So I figured "fine, we've got two satellite systems, we should be able to pick it up still."

Problem. Our main dish isn't programmed to swing to AMC-6, the new satellite for the feed. Oops. Unlike the pizza-sized satellite dishes that you can find in the average neighborhood, our dishes are 12 feet in diameter. With Dish Network or DirecTV, you're pointed at one satellite in the sky and all your programming comes through it. Our dishes are motorized and you have to swing them to seperate satellites across the sky.

Satellite Television Crash Course

If you have a small dish at home, let me explain how it works:

1. Your satellite provider downlinks all of your channels using big dishes like the ones we have at KLRN to their facility. These channels are then downconverted to a lower quality, digitally compressed, and then beamed back into the sky to one of their own dishes. Dish Network has 9 of their own satellites, Echostar I through IX. DirecTV has 5 birds in the sky.

2. Your pizza dish then downlinks the compressed signals from your provider's satellites. If you're ever watching the same channel with a friend who has cable and you're talking on the phone, you'll notice a delay. This is because cable providers have many local downlink facilities around the nation and once downlinked directly from the satellites that the channels originate from, it's zipped at the speed of light through cable to your home.

Our dishes downlink programming DIRECTLY from the satellites, there is no middle man to deliver the signal. Anyways, my boss said "we'll program the new satellite into the receiver." Okay. So we tried that today but the satellite is out of the range of our primary receiving site. So we tried the other dish. Unfortunately, that one receive C-band transmissions, which is what NASA is broadcasting on.

I don't know why I just wrote all that, but I'm bored.

So let me close by explaining why the big ugly dishes (BUDs) are better:

1. You get programming directly from the broadcaster with no middle man. The signal is broadcast-quality, and much better than what you get from the little dishes or cable.

2. The big networks distribute their programming to local afiliates using BUDs. You can pick up these feeds in most cases and watch the shows commerical-free, and before they air in your local area.

3. Have you seen Fahrenheit 911? The scenes of all the politicians getting their makeup on were actually pulled off of a satellite feed to the networks. When something live is uplinked, you can pick up the feeds that the networks use and get all the action without commercials, commentary from news anchors, or other crap/

4. You still have to pay for the "cable" channels when you pull them from the satellites, but you can buy channels a-la-carte, you only have to pay for the channels you want.

Whatever. Maybe you learned something today. :)

that as the income goes up, so does the percentage. The rich still pay more taxes than the commonfolk!

Okay, fine, but America's Elite have so much goddamn money that they'll never spend it in their lifetime! Why not collect more cash from them for the government to spend?

A couple reasons. (1) Raising taxes on an individual reduces the incentive to earn money. ("Why should I make money if the government's going to take it?") (2) Rich folk ALREADY donate large sums of money to what are called philanthropic causes. That's right. Let's look a definition of philanthropy, shall we?

Philanthropy involves the donation or granting of money to various worthy charitable causes. It is seen as a way to directly effect change in society without recourse to the bureaucratic mechanisms of government. Someone who practices philanthropy is known as a philanthropist. Philanthropy is a major source of income for artistic, musical, religious, humanitarian causes.

(3) This country claims to be capitalist, yet we punish those who earn large sums of money through the system. A capitalist country that doesn't positively encourage capitalism. Huh.

Even if the tax brackets were eliminated and everyone was taxed the same percentage regardless of income, not only would there finally be equality in that arena, but THE RICH WOULD STILL PAY MORE TAXES!

Don't buy into the horseshit claims. Opponents of President Bush and other leaders who have paved the road for tax cuts completely ignore evidence that cuts encourage more commerce, and generally contribute to a good and healthy economy. Americans, ALL Americans are overtaxed. And what for? To fund useless government programs like the pointless War on Drugs, give money to faceless bureaucrats to impose more regulations and restrictions on our lives, and to generally screw us all across the board.

When the economy was in a slump, liberal-minded folks shot down Bush's idea of tax cuts as useless and unnecessary. When the economy started looking up again, and it was easily argued that tax cuts helped it to do so, Democratic politicians changed their story and claimed the Bush cuts were THEIR idea. Oh, okay.

Apparently guests of at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas are not supporters of Michael Moore and his movie "Fahrenheit 9/11". When Rondstadt performed a one-night show and dedicated her song "Desperado" to Moore she was greeted with loud boos and a very angry crowd. She praised him as "a great American patriot" and "someone who is spreading the truth". This led some in the crowd to tear down posters and throw their drinks while demanding their money back. Rondstadt was promptly thrown out of the hotel and not allowed to return to her hotel room. She was told to never come back.

In response to this event Rock the Vote president Jehmu Greene released the following statement:

"The treatment of Linda Rondstadt in Las Vegas earlier this week is yet another frightening example of the climate of hostility that has sprouted up towards artists and free expression in the United States. Ms. Rondstadt’s comments are an example of free speech, which is protected by the U.S. Constitution. The way she was treated is an assault on free expression of all Americans and is a reminder to all why we must fight to protect it everyday."

Gee, last I checked, the Aladdin Hotel is private property. The owners set the rules, and the owners get to kick out whomever the hell they want. End of discussion.

Good old Mikey recently gave a speech to "progressve" activists in Cambridge, MA alongside Howard Dean. In typical Stupid White Man fashion, Moore delivered his usual blah blah blah...evil Bush...bla bla bla...warmongerer...bla bla bla...liberal majority...bla bla bla verbal diarrhea.

But I was surprised to find a rare nugget of clear thought from our favorite obese orator, who apparently has paid attention to John Kerry and smelled the waffles...

"But here's my plea to the Democrats and to Mr. Kerry. You will not win this election by being weak kneed and wimpy and wishy-washy and lacking the courage of your convictions..."

I never thought I'd catch myself saying this, but WAY TO GO, MIKEY! It's refreshing to find a small grain of truth in a desert (or dessert, one of the two) of lies. Really.

More Fuel for the Fox News Fire

I have to hand it to New York Times Public Editor Daniel Okrent for writing a very good piece on the Times' alleged liberal bias. Okrent, an "admitted Democrat," broke the ice with the title and first line of his column...

Is The New York Times a Liberal Newspaper?
Of course it is.

Citing a myriad of hot-button issues, Okrent goes on to say this:
"On a topic that has produced one of the defining debates of our time, Times editors have failed to provide the three-dimensional perspective balanced journalism requires. This has not occurred because of management fiat, but because getting outside one's own value system takes a great deal of self-questioning." [emphasis added]

The folks over at MoveOn who sit on their asses and try to find stupid shit to complain about should read this article. Okrent ADMITS the Times' liberal slant, and goes on to defend the paper as properly representative of the city in which it originates.

"The Times has chosen to be an unashamed product of the city whose name it bears, a condition magnified by the been-there-done-that irony afflicting too many journalists. Articles containing the word 'postmodern' have appeared in The Times an average of four times a week this year - true fact! - and if that doesn't reflect a Manhattan sensibility, I'm Noam Chomsky."

My question is, why is MoveOn only campaigning against right-wing news sources? If they're so concerned about bringing objectivity and accuracy in commercial media, why are they not targeting SELF-ADMITTED leftist news sources as well? Oh, that's right, they have an agenda. Unfortunately most of MoveOn's rabid, hopelessly brainwashed devotees fail to recognize that.

This isn't about whether one bias or another is justified, it's about people who are seeking to limit the right to a free press, free enterprise, and letting people decide on their own. MoveOn's agenda is to try and silence voices of dissent, voices that go against their ideology. They're afraid that they'll lose legions of their followers. Before you know it, they'll have evolved into the new Thought Police.

This is common sense, the Times has the unalienable right to present the news in whatever way it wants to. I'm sure most people will agree with me on this one. But by accepting this idea, you can't exclude Fox News just because they're not liberal.

Consumers need to make informed descisions on what they expose themselves to. It's not up to special interest groups to try and dictate what we watch, listen to, and read.
